Liverpool turn to Brazil for Chilwell alternative

Liverpool are weighing up a move for Atletico Mineiro left-back Douglas Santos after their £7m bid for Leicester defender Ben Chilwell was rejected, claims Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, via The Daily Express.

Jurgen Klopp is keen to add another left-back to the squad after Alberto Moreno came in for fierce criticism for his defensive displays last season and Liverpool had earmarked Chilwell as one of their main targets.

However, the Premier League champions are demanding £10m for the novice teenager and Liverpool are now exploring other options before assessing whether to increase their offer.

Santos, 22, has spent the last 12 months back in his homeland after Atletico Mineiro signed him from Udinese for £3.5m but the Brazilian has since been linked with a return to Europe this summer.

The youngster still has two years remaining on his existing deal with Mineiro and has one international appearance with Brazil to his name. Into his second season with Mineiro, he has more tackles and interceptions combined than any other teammate in the Brazilian top-flight (190).
