Injury threatening Hammers move for Song

West Ham United’s attempts to re-sign Alex Song from Barcelona could be scuppered after the Cameroonian midfielder suffered an ankle injury.

Song spent last season on loan at the Hammers and the east London outfit had hoped to make the deal permanent this summer, but it is now being reported that the 27-year-old could be out for up to four months if surgery is required to fix his ankle problem.

It is understood that the former Arsenal midfielder had been close to agreeing personal terms with the Hammers, with just a transfer fee needing to be agreed with Barcelona. However, the move is now in doubt with West Ham waiting to discover the extent of the problem.

The former Arsenal midfielder was one of West Ham’s stand out players last term, particularly during the first half of the season and it would be a loss if the move was ruled out because of injury.

The Cameroonian midfielder added bite as well as composure to the heart of West Ham’s side last season. No player in the West Ham squad made more tackles per game (3.3) than Song in the Premier League and only eight players in the league could claim to match or better him on that front.

Added to that, only Mark Noble contributed more passes per game (49.1) for the Hammers than Song (43.5) in the 2014/15 campaign.
