Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez this summer, reports ESPN.
Rodriguez, 25, is set to leave Madrid at the end of the season after failing to establish himself as a first-team regular under Zinedine Zidane.
The fact that Madrid play a 4-3-3 formation has not helped Rodriguez’s cause given the Colombia international’s preferred position is in the No.10 role behind the striker.
As a result, Rodriguez’s representatives are now beginning to sound out potential options for the midfielder with United, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain thought of as possible summer destinations.
While a deal to bring Rodriguez to Old Trafford is well within United’s means, Jose Mourinho’s side might proceed with caution given the way in which Angel Di Maria’s move from Madrid panned out.
United signed the Argentina international from Madrid in the summer of 2014 for a then-British transfer fee of £59.7m but was then sold to PSG just 12 months later after failing to impress United manager Louis van Gaal.
Rodriguez has only made 20 appearances in La Liga this season, but only 12 of those have come as a starter. Nevertheless, he has still managed to score eight goals and weigh in with six further assists.
Of players that have started at least 10 games in the last three La Liga campaigns, Rodriguez has required fewer minutes per key pass than any other player (1 every 27 minutes).
