No progress on new Atletico Madrid contract, admits Oblak
Jan Oblak has revealed his long-term future at Atletico Madrid is far from certain as no progress has been made on a new contract.
The Slovenia international’s existing deal isn’t due to expire until 2021 but the Atletico star has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent years.
Oblak is widely considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the world but there have been mixed reports about whether a new contract is in the offing.
The 25-year-old reportedly has a €100m release clause in his current deal and Oblak has revealed nothing has been agreed with the club.
“About a new contract at Atletico I can only tell you one thing – there is nothing new,” he told Slovenian newspaper Ekipa.
“I know there have been many things written about how everything is agreed, and also the other way saying there will be no new contract. The only certain thing is that there is nothing new. I have a contract I signed two-and-a-half years ago.
“Soon we will know what Atletico’s plan is. It is difficult to talk about what will happen tomorrow, more difficult to say what will happen next season.”
Of goalkeepers that have made at least five appearances in Europe’s top five leagues this season, Oblak has the best save success rate (88.3%).
Furthermore, Oblak has kept at least 24 more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the last three La Liga campaigns (57).
