Villa confirm Garde appointment

Aston Villa have announced former Lyon manager Remi Garde as Tim Sherwood’s successor.

Garde, 49, has put pen to paper on a three-year deal at Villa and will be in the stands to watch his side take on Spurs at White Hart Lane on Monday night, although it is understood caretaker boss Kevin McDonald will have full control over team selection and changes.

The former Arsenal midfielder will be in charge when Villa take on Manchester City in the final match before the international break.

"It is an unbelievable honour to be the manager of such an illustrious football club," Garde told the Villa website.

"I've had extremely positive meetings with both the owner, Randy Lerner, and chief executive Tom Fox. They have ambitious plans for the club and I'm excited that they have turned to me to help them relaise them.

"Obviously we have a difficult task in front of us but I'm looking forward to the challenge with the support of everyone who loves Aston Villa."

Garde will be tasked with the challenge of reinvigorating a side that has won just one of their opening 11 league matches thus far. The Villans are rock bottom and four points adrift of safety having lost their last six matches.
