Sakho pens new long-term Liverpool deal

Liverpool have announced defender Mamadou Sakho has committed his long-term future to the club after signing a new five-year deal until 2020.

Sakho, 25, joined Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain in 2013 but has struggled to nail down a regular first team starting spot and had been rumoured to be leaving the club this summer.

However, the France international has resisted temptation to leave Liverpool and committed his long-term future to the club.

“I am very happy to sign a long-term contract with Liverpool because, as I’ve always said, I am very happy here and my family are happy in Liverpool,” Sakho told the club’s official website.

“I will keep working because I am a Liverpool soldier and when Liverpool need me, I try to give my best. I am happy to stay as a scouser.”

The French defender is yet to appear in the Premier League this season but wore the captain’s armband during their 1-1 draw with Bordeaux in the Europa League on Thursday night, and has since been tipped with a recall to the starting XI when Liverpool take on Norwich on Saturday.

Last season, only Martin Skrtel (90.1%) finished the Premier League campaign with a better pass success rate than Sakho (89.4%) for Liverpool.
