Southampton announced on Thursday night the arrival of Monaco striker Guido Carrillo on a three-and-a-half-year deal until June 2021.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side have reportedly shelled out in excess of £19m to sign the 26-year-old, which would make him a club-record signing, although Southampton have not disclosed this information.
Southampton have been on the market for a new striker all month following their woes in front of goal this season and now hope to have solved that issue by signing Carrillo.
“I’m very happy,” Carrillo told Southampton’s official website. “It’s a great feeling to be a part of this club.
“Lots of things attracted me. I know Southampton from watching the Premier League from when I was small, I’ve always regarded it as the most important league in the world.
“I obviously know the coaching staff, I’ve worked with them in Argentina and I also spoke with some players who were former teammates in Argentina, who are now playing in the Premier League and they told me all about the club and gave it a shining reference. Therefore, I had no doubts when I took the decision.”
The Argentine striker only managed two league starts for Monaco this season, making a further 13 appearances from the bench.
Despite limited game time (417 minutes of action), Carrillo has scored the same amount of league goals as Southampton strikers Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long combined, who have played 1962 minutes of league action between them.
Furthermore, of Ligue 1 players that have made at least 15 appearances this term, Carrillo is winning the most aerial duels per 90 (6.9).
