Jan Vertonghen has become the latest Tottenham player to commit his future the club.
The Belgium international’s previous deal was due to expire in 2018 and there had been some doubts over his long-term future at the club.
Vertonghen, however, has extended his stay by a further 12 months keeping him at the club until 2019.
“Once I put my autograph on the paper it was a big relief,” he told Tottenham’s official website, via the London Evening Standard. “The future looks great so I’m very happy to be a apart of it. It’s an unbelievable group of guys and a privilege to be part of that.
“There’s a great atmosphere in the team and there’s a great buzz around Tottenham.”
The 29-year-old is the second Tottenham player to extend their stay in as many days after Harry Kane signed a five-and-a-half-year deal on Thursday.
Kane’s new deal has made the England international the club’s best paid player in their history, with the No.10 set to earn a reported £120,000-a-week until 2022.
Vertonghen has completed more clearances than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues (120).
