The Football Association have charged Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho with misconduct after being sent to the stands by manager Mark Clattenburg during their 0-0 draw with Burnley on Saturday.
Mourinho reportedly lost his temper with Clattenburg in the tunnel at the interval after the referee failed to award the home side a penalty when Matteo Darmian was tripped inside the box just before half time.
The United manager initially took his seat next to some home fans in the front row besides his dugout before being ushered up into the stands to watch the rest of United’s incredible stalemate with Burnley.
Mourinho has been given until 6pm on 4 November to respond to his charge. The Portuguese manager will be handed a one-match touchline ban should he accept the charge, which will rule him out of Sunday’s match against Swansea.
However, should Mourinho contest the charge he will then run the risk of being banned for an extra game, which would mean he would miss United’s match against Arsenal after the international break and a reunion with Arsene Wenger.
Mourinho’s history with Wenger is well documented and it’s an opponent the United manager has an incredible record against. In fact, Mourinho has only beaten sides managed by Mark Hughes (11) more than he has triumphed against Wenger (8).
