Manchester United have joined Bayern Munich in the race to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, according to Sky Sports Germany.
Injuries have restricted the 24-year-old to just 10 league starts this season but his form in a Barcelona shirt has alerted both United and Bayern.
Barcelona though are keen to ward off interest in Araujo in January and have set an asking price of €80m.
The Uruguay international is also believed to be happy in Spain, however that is unlikely to deter United and Bayern from pursuing his services either this month or in the summer.
Able to cover at both right-back and centre-back, Araujo's versatility is a desireable trait for the European heavyweights, both of whom are seeking defensive reinforcements.
United are wary that Raphael Varane could leave at the end of the season after the Premier League side opted against triggering the option to extend his contract by a year, and that means he is free to negotiate a summer transfer to an overseas side.
The Premier League side are in the market for a new centre-back and have been linked with moves for Jean-Clair Todibo and Jarrad Branthwaite.
