Arsenal target Rodgers signs new Leicester deal

Leicester have announced Brendan Rodgers has signed improved terms to ward off interest from Arsenal.

Rodgers emerged as a top contender for the Arsenal job in the wake of Unai Emery’s departure last week.

The 46-year-old has transformed Leicester back into genuine top-four contenders in less than 12 months and his stock has soared in that time.

Rodgers, who previously came close to winning the title in charge of Liverpool, has now pledged his long-term future to Leicester until the summer of 2025.

“When I made the decision to come to Leicester City, it was because I was excited about the direction the club was taking and how I could apply my experience to the journey,” Rodgers told the club’s official website. “I came here with a purpose to add something to that and to help the club build for the future.

“The support I have had from the Chairman, Khun Top; from the chief executive, Susan Whelan; from the director of football, John Ruskin; and from everyone at the club has been amazing. I’ve inherited an outstanding team of staff that are dedicated to progress and improvement and we have a group of players that are a joy to work with every day.

“And to the club’s supporters, I can only say thank you for welcoming me and my staff into your club and for putting your faith in our work. We’ll continue to work together to bring success to Leicester City for many years to come.”

News Rodgers has renewed with Leicester is a huge blow to Arsenal’s recruitment team and forces them back to square one in their search for Emery’s long-term successor.

Leicester are currently Liverpool’s closest challengers in the Premier League, as the Foxes are eight points back in second place.

Furthermore, Leicester have the best defensive record in the Premier League this season and are the only team yet to reach double figures for goals conceded (9).
