Newcastle ready to save Manchester United outcast's Premier League career

Newcastle are ready to hand Phil Jones a Premier League lifeline and offer the defender a way out of Manchester United, reports The Mirror on Sunday.

The 28-year-old has become a figure of fun in recent years with United, while his injury issues has seen him fail to really consolidate a first team spot at Old Trafford.

Jones has made just two Premier League starts for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side this season and six competitive starts overall.

Jones is expected to leave United in the summer with the club willing to listen to offers of around £12m for the centre-back.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce is keen to strike a deal for Jones as he looks to add another defender to his squad at the end of the season.

Newcastle have endured their fair share of injury defensive woes this season and Bruce is aiming to bolster the ranks on Tyneside.

Jones signed a new deal at United last year until 2023, so the club aren't at risk of losing the defender for free anytime soon.

Jones' last appearance in a United shirt came in their 6-0 FA Cup win at Tranmere, a match he scored in.
