Bayern Munich have announced star midfielder Thiago Alcantara has put pen to paper on a new contract extension keeping him at the club until 2021.
Thiago’s previous deal was due to expire in 2019 but the Spain international has enjoyed his finest season to date after putting his previous injury woes behind him.
The 26-year-old has arguably been one of the best players in Europe this season and has really kicked on under Carlo Ancelotti, with Bayern rewarding the midfield maestro with a new improved deal.
“Thiago is one of the best and therefore the most coveted midfielder in Europe,” Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club’s official website. “We are very happy that we have been able to bind this outstanding professional to the club in the long-term.
Thiago joined Bayern from Barcelona in 2013 and the decision of the Spanish side to let him leave continues to look a bad one.
In fact, only Lionel Messi (8.46) and Neymar (8.43) have secured a higher WhoScored rating in Europe’s top five leagues this season than Thiago (8.26).
The Bayern midfielder has also completed the most interceptions in Europe’s top five leagues this season (116).
