Chelsea have had a stunning €100m (£87.6m) bid for Gonzalo Higuain turned down by Serie A giants Juventus, reports Tuttosport, via Football Italia.
The Premier League champions are on the market for a new striker after deeming Diego Costa surplus to requirements and have been forced to re-think their transfer strategy after losing the race to sign Romelu Lukaku.
Chelsea are reportedly on track to sign Borussia Dortmund ace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a club-record £65m deal but reports in Italy are now claiming that Antonio Conte’s side failed with a mouthwatering €100m offer for Higuain.
Juventus only signed Higuain from Napoli last summer after triggering his €90m (£78.8m) release clause but they’ve now been given the chance to make a profit on the Argentina international despite the fact he will turn 30 at the end of the year.
Antonio Conte’s side have never previously paid more than £50m for a player after signing Fernando Torres from Liverpool in January 2011, but Juventus have no intention of losing their star striker following the backlash of losing key defender Leonardo Bonucci to rivals AC Milan.
Only three players scored more goals from openplay in Europe’s top five leagues than Higuain last season (24).
