Team News

St. Johnstone
Hibernian
  • St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari named five changes to the Saints side that lost 2-1 to Dundee United at McDiarmid Park on Boxing Day, before they were smashed 4-0 by Celtic at Parkhead in their final fixture of 2024.
  • Josh Rae continued in goal. Kyle Cameron started in the trio of centre-backs alongside Jack Sanders and Bozo Mikulic. Incoming duo Andre Raymond and Fran Franczak started as the wing-backs, as Drey Wright and David Keltjens made way.
  • Matt Smith and Aaron Essel accompanied Sven Sprangler in midfield, replacing Graham Carey and Jason Holt. Nicky Clark took Benji Kimpioka's place to support lone striker Makenzie Kirk.
  • Hibernian manager David Gray named two changes to the Hibs team that was victorious on derby day with a 2-1 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle on Boxing Day, before a sole goal success over Kilmarnock at Easter Road.
  • Goalkeeper Jordan Smith kept his place between the sticks. Jack Iredale, Rocky Bushiri and Lewis Miller, who replaced Warren O'Hora, made up the Hibees' backline. Chris Cadden remained at right wing-back, as his brother Nicky was on the left flank.
  • Club captain Joe Newell and Nectarios Traintis were chosen in midfield once again. Josh Campbell supported Martin Boyle and Junior Hoilett in the Hibs attack, as Elie Youan dropped out of the squad and derby day hero Dwight Gayle was on the bench.

Prediction

  • Struggling St Johnstone host a Hibernian team that have hoisted themselves away from a basement battle in their first Scottish Premiership fixture of 2025.
  • Saints were at the foot of the league table on Christmas Day and have continued to stay at the bottom of the Premiership pile after four straight defeats, and five in their last six since a 1-0 victory over Kilmarnock in their final league fixture of November. Having failed to score against Hibernian in the reverse fixture at Easter Road, Saints will hope to put the Hibees under more pressure in Perth.
  • Hibernian have kept four clean sheets in the Scottish Premiership this season, with their latest coming at the weekend against Kilmarnock, and their first coming against Saints back in September. Hibs appear a much stronger side since they last played Saints, winning four league matches on the spin for the first time since October 2022 and will want to make it five to kick off 2025 with a win and potential top six spot.
  • St Johnstone succumbed to defeat against Hibernian in Edinburgh back in September and, given the rejuvenated Hibees' recent form, that should also be the case in Perth too.
