Team News

Dundee FC
Dundee United
  • Dundee manager Tony Docherty made two changes from the Dee team that lost 3-0 at Dens to Ross County on Boxing Day, before they bounced back with an impressive 2-1 victory in Paisley against St Mirren on Sunday afternoon.
  • Trevor Carson continued in goal behind Billy Koumetio and Ryan Astley, who were joined by Jordan McGhee in the back three. Antonio Portales is out with a hamstring injury so Finlay Robertson came in at left wing-back with Josh Mulligan chosen at right wing-back.
  • Mo Sylla and Lyall Cameron started in the middle of the park, as Scott Tiffoney made way in midfield. Oluwaseun Adewumi supported the incoming Seb Palmer-Houlden and Simon Murray - who bagged a brace against the Buddies - at the weekend.
  • Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin named three changes to the Terrors team that came from behind on Boxing Day to beat St Johnstone 2-1 in Perth, before they left it late to beat Aberdeen at Tannadice by a sole goal on Sunday evening.
  • Jack Walton continued in goal behind Emmanuel Adegboyega and Kevin Holt, but the suspended Declan Gallagher missed the victory against Aberdeen. United switched to a back four with Will Ferry and Ryan Strain starting at left-back and right-back respectively.
  • Luca Stephenson returned to the midfield to accompany Vicko Sevelj at Richard Odada's expense. Kai Fotheringham also dropped onto the bench as Macedonian duo David Babunski and Kristijan Trapanovski joined Glenn Middleton in support of sole striker Sam Dalby.

Prediction

  • Dundee and Dundee United meet at Dens Park in the second Dundee derby, in a dress rehearsal of the two teams meeting in the Scottish Cup fourth round later this month.
  • Dundee's inconsistency has been evident in recent matches. After an embarrassing defeat in their last league match at Dens Park to Ross County and three straight league games without scoring, a superb victory in Paisley against St Mirren certainly came out the blue to end their three-game unbeaten run. Having gone toe-to-toe at Tannadice with United, they're aiming to go one better here having not beaten United at home since 2017.
  • Dundee United strengthened their grip on fourth place in the Scottish Premiership table, even closing the gap on third-placed Aberdeen after leaving it late to beat the Dons to end 2024 in style. The Terrors were pegged back by their city rivals twice in a four-goal thriller back in August, but they sit nine points ahead of their noisy neighbours and would love nothing more than to nip back over the road with three points.
  • The last three Dundee derbies have ended in draws, with two 2-2 draws succeeding a goalless game which was the last derby at Dens Park. A share of the spoils would therefore not be a surprise, with both teams capable of damaging one another.
