Team News

St. Johnstone
Dundee FC
  • St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari named four changes to the Saints side that was smashed 4-0 by Celtic at Parkhead in their final fixture of 2024, before they held Hibs to a 1-1 draw at McDiarmid Park to kick off 2025.
  • Josh Rae continued in goal behind a centre-back pairing of Jack Sanders and Bozo Mikulic as Kyle Cameron made way. Andre Raymond started at left-back with Drey Wright coming in at right-back.
  • Jason Holt, who was sent off against Hibernian, took Matt Smith's spot in the middle of the park to join Fran Franczak and Sven Sprangler in midfield. Nicky Clark supported a new front two of Adama Sidibeh and Benji Kimpioka, with Aaron Essel and Makenzie Kirk being replaced.
  • Dundee manager Tony Docherty made two enforced changes from the Dee's impressive 2-1 victory in Paisley against St Mirren, before they began 2025 with a Dundee derby defeat as they lost to United at Dens Park by the same scoreline.
  • Trevor Carson remained in goal behind Ryan Astley, who was joined by Clark Robertson and Luke Graham in the back three with Jordan McGhee and Billy Koumetio injured. Finlay Robertson and Josh Mulligan continued as wing-backs.
  • Mo Sylla and Lyall Cameron started in the middle of the park against United, just as they had against St Mirren. Oluwaseun Adewumi supported the incoming Seb Palmer-Houlden and Simon Murray in the Dee frontline.

Prediction

  • Twelfth hosts ninth, as bottom of the pile St Johnstone take on Dundee in a Tayside derby at McDiarmid Park with both teams seeking their first Scottish Premiership victory of 2025.
  • St Johnstone had lost both of their last two league meetings with Hibernian before Thursday afternoon's stalemate, ensuring that the last time they lost three top tier meetings on the spin against Hibs was back in September 2009. Saints have only won their opening league game of the calendar year once in 12 years, but a point is a decent result considering their numerical disadvantage.
  • Dundee met Dundee United in their first Scottish Premiership game of a calendar year for the first time since 2016 but, unlike then when the hosts won 2-1 at Dens, the Dee were defeated in the derby despite taking the lead versus the Terrors. It's Dundee's first top-tier loss at home to their rivals since September 2014, but they'll hope to put that behind them and return to winning ways.
  • Despite an impressive victory in their last away game, Dundee could be held by St Johnstone here after Saints held Hibs in their last home match at McDiarmid Park.
