Team News

St. Mirren
Rangers
  • St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson named two enforced changes to the Saints eleven that left it late to leave Perth with a 3-2 victory over St Johnstone, before another late winner saw them beat Ross County 2-1 in Dingwall on Saturday.
  • Ellery Balcombe continued in goal behind Richard Taylor, Alex Iacovitti - who replaced the suspended Alex Gogic - and Marcus Fraser in the Buddies' backline. Elvis Bwomono and Scott Tanser (who was sent off in the Highlands) remained at right and left wing-back respectively.
  • Oisin Smyth, the hero in the Highlands, replaced club captain Mark O'Hara to accompany Killian Phillips in midfield. Roland Idowu was the hero at McDiarmid Park and he took Conor McMenamin's place to join Greg Kiltie in support of lone striker Mikael Mandron.
  • Rangers boss Philippe Clement made three changes after the Gers' Hampden heartbreak as they lost the Scottish League Cup final on penalties to Celtic, before bouncing back with a sole goal success against Dundee at Ibrox on Saturday.
  • Jack Butland accompanied his wife in labour so was a late withdrawal from the matchday squad, as Liam Kelly started for the Gers in goal. Dujon Sterling replaced Leon Balogun in the Gers defence containing James Tavernier, Robin Propper and Jefte.
  • Mohamed Diomande and Nico Raskin started ahead of the defence once more. The weekend matchwinner Vaclav Cerny and Ianis Hagi were joined by Danilo, as opposed to Nedim Bajrami, in support of lone striker Hamza Igamane.

Prediction

  • The final festive Scottish Premiership fixture on Boxing Day sees sixth-placed St Mirren - in a rich vein of form - host Rangers, who leapfrogged Aberdeen into second place in the league table.
  • St Mirren have won three of their last four away league matches, since a narrow defeat to Rangers at Ibrox, with late goals against the bottom two teams aiding their quest for a top-six spot. Saints have been strong in front of their own supporters, which was also a key element of last season's success, and having missed out to the Gers in their last meeting they'll be out for revenge.
  • As Aberdeen lost to Hibs at Pittodrie, a sole goal was enough for Rangers to sneak past Dundee and into second place. Nine points behind Celtic, the Gers know that there aren't many opportunities to slip up with fixtures coming thick and fast. The most noteworthy game over the festive period is their first of 2025, against their rivals, which they'll want to enter in good form.
  • St Mirren should provide Rangers with a tough test in Paisley but, given the nature of the match at New Year, the Gers must find a way of beating the Buddies on Boxing Day by hook or by crook.
