Team News

St. Mirren
Rangers
  • Stephen Robinson named four changes to the St Mirren side that fell to a 3-0 defeat to Celtic in their last league match, before booking their place in the Scottish Cup fifth round courtesy of a sole goal success against Queen of the South.
  • James Bolton accompanied weekend goalscorer Alex Gogic and Marcus Fraser in the Buddies backline as Richard Taylor made way for Kwon Hyeok-kyu to make his debut. Elvis Bwomono made his first Saints start at right wing-back against the League 1 outfit, replacing Ryan Flynn.
  • Toyosi Olusanya is suspended after his sending off against Celtic. He and Mikael Mandron dropped out of the starting XI as Conor McMenamin and Jonah Ayunga were chosen against the third tier team on Saturday afternoon.
  • Rangers manager Philippe Clement named three changes from the Gers team that beat Dumbarton 4-1 in the Scottish Cup at the weekend, before their midweek match ended in a comfortable 3-0 victory at Easter Road against Hibernian.
  • Jack Butland was reinstated in goal at Robby McCrorie's expense. Connor Goldson was suspended for the trip to the capital, so Leon Balogun joined John Souttar at the heart of the Gers defence.
  • Cyriel Dessers wrapped up proceedings in Edinburgh against Hibs, after Ridvan Yilmaz and Todd Cantwell's goals, but from the bench as Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Fabio Silva made his first league start against the Hibees.

Prediction

  • Three places separate St Mirren in fifth and Rangers who are sat in second, ahead of the two teams meeting in Paisley this weekend as the Scottish Premiership returns.
  • For St Mirren, progression in the Scottish Cup was all that mattered, despite scraping past third-tier Queen of the South by a sole goal to arrange another home tie albeit to the reigning cup holders and treble winners. The Buddies have had some tough tests in the Scottish Premiership recently, with those continuing here, but one win in their last four is form that must be corrected.
  • It was pretty routine for Rangers at Easter Road against Hibernian, with their impressive recent record against the Hibees in Edinburgh continuing. The gap at the top has been cut to five points with the Gers having made the most of one of their games in hand. They still have another as they look to hunt Celtic down, but will need to focus on the job in hand here before the Hoops play.
  • Rangers' recent domestic run has only seen one slip-up, away to bitter rivals Celtic, and they should look to put the Hoops under pressure with a win against St Mirren this Saturday.
