Team News

Celtic
St. Johnstone
  • Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers made two changes to the Celts side that claimed an impressive 3-1 victory against Aberdeen at Pittodrie, before a shock 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock which saw the Hoops eliminated from the Scottish League Cup.
  • Swedish defender Gustaf Lagerbielke started alongside Maik Nawrocki at Rugby Park in the heart of the Hoops defence as he made his debut on Sunday. Cameron Carter-Vickers is out through injury, joining a few stars on the treatment table.
  • Norwegian midfielder Odin Holm made his first Celtic start, accompanying club captain Callum McGregor and Matt O'Riley in the middle of the park, as the injured David Turnbull dropped out of the starting eleven in East Ayrshire.
  • St Johnstone boss Steven MacLean made two changes to the Saints side that lost 2-0 to Hearts at McDiarmid Park, before falling to defeat in Dingwall against Ross County by the same scoreline the weekend before last.
  • Andy Considine replaced the injured Tony Gallacher to start at left-back. He joined Liam Gordon, Sam McClelland and Oludare Olufunwa in Saints' back four. Daniel Phillips and Ryan McGowan coninued in midfield, just in front of them.
  • Matt Smith replaced Drey Wright on the right hand side of midfield. Graham Carey and Cammy Ballantyne joined the Welshman in support of lone striker Stevie May in attack.

Prediction

  • Both Celtic and St Johnstone are seeking a response, from disappointing defeats last time out which they will hope won't have too significant a bearing on their season.
  • Brendan Rodgers finally tasted a defeat in the cup for the first time as Celtic manager, having previously won all of the 24 ties he'd overseen as Hoops boss. Celtic supporters have become accustomed to trophies aplenty, with several trebles in recent seasons, and attention now turns towards a domestic double. Participation in European club competitions should be seen as a bonus.
  • Saints have had an extra week to prepare for this match, as a result of a disastrous Scottish League Cup group stage campaign. Sadly for St Johnstone, that form has followed them into their Scottish Premiership season so far. The visitors are yet to score a goal, just like Livingston, with Saints and Hibernian the only two teams that are yet to pick up a Premiership point in 2023/24.
  • In front of a likely packed Parkhead, Celtic - who won all three league meetings with Saints last season - will seek a response from the Kilmarnock catastrophe against a sorry St Johnstone side.
