Team News

Villarreal
Real Betis
  • Francis Coquelin is out for Villarreal with a cruciate ligament injury and won't be back until October, at least.
  • Raúl Albiol is back in training as he recovers from a knee injury, but is a doubt for the season opener.
  • Ramón Terrats, signed from Girona in the window, will likely earn a starting spot in midfield. Alexander Sørloth, signed from RB Leipzig, is set to start on Sunday too.
  • Ben Brereton Diaz could make his debut since signing from Blackburn in June, but will probably make a cameo from the bench.
  • Betis have announced that William Carvalho will miss the opening game of the season with a muscle problem in his right leg. Leeds United loanee Marc Roca could come in to replace him.
  • Nabil Fekir is out with a cruciate ligament injury; Isco, signed from Real Madrid in the summer, could replace him in attacking midfield.
  • Marc Bartra returns to Betis, signing from Trabzonspor, and will slot straight in to a starting centre-back role, especially since Edgar Gonzalez has left to join Almeria.

Prediction

  • Quique Setién's Villarreal begin the season without a number of last season's integral players; Nico Jackson, Pau Torres, Samu Chukwueze, and Boulaye Dia have all left the club. Sunday's hosts have signed a couple of quality attacking players to plug the holes left by their departing stars, but could struggle to score goals to begin with.
  • Real Betis, however, have signed players to strengthen their spine in the form of Marc Bartra, Isco, and Marc Roca. Manuel Pellegrini's side have suffered a blow though, losing Sergio Canales, who has left to play in Mexico.
  • Both sides will be fighting to qualify for Europe this season, with both teams participating in the Europa League as well, making it hard to find a clear winner from this match. A much weaker Villarreal have been poor in pre-season, failing to win a single game. Their lack of star players this year could certainly see them struggle.
