Team News

Athletic Club
Real Madrid
  • Athletic Club have so far held on to starlet Nico Williams who will undoubtedly start in attack for the Basque club; his brother Iñaki should also start since recovering from a knee injury in the summer.
  • Since joining this summer from Mallorca, Iñigo Ruíz de Galarreta is fit and ready to make his mark in Bilbao's side.
  • Long-time club servant Iker Muniain was regularly left out by Ernesto Valverde last season but is expected to feature this year, being heavily involved in pre-season.
  • Yuri Berchiche continues to recover from an injury he sustained when both clubs last met, but is doubtful to start against Los Blancos.
  • New signing and former youth player Fran Garcia could start under Carlo Ancelotti, especially with Ferland Mendy absent due to a muscle injury. David Alaba however has played at left-back regularly before and will most likely be fielded there against Athletic Club.
  • The departure of Karim Benzema has left Ancelotti a dilemma in attack, with Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo set to step in as roaming forwards.
  • Jude Bellingham, signed for €103 Million from Borussia Dortmund, may play the role of an advanced number eight, dropping in behind and facilitating Brazilian flair up top.
  • New striker Joselu could feature, but is likely to play a back-up role.
  • Ancelotti is likely to bench Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić.

Prediction

  • Real Madrid are likely favourites to win at the San Mames Barria on Saturday, having beaten the hosts three times in their last five meetings. Athletic Bilbao are in good form, though, having held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw last week in pre-season.
  • According to Madrid Journalist José Luis Sanches, Carlos Ancelotti will field a team injected with youth on the opening weekend, which could see Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni start together in midfield behind Jude Bellingham.
  • Real Madrid are potentially slightly blunted in attack this season since the departure of club legend Karim Benzema. With Florentino Perez's sights firmly set on Kylian Mbappé to fill the void at number nine, the team may have to deal with the absence of a world-class out-and-out striker until next Summer.
  • Athletic Bilbao could surprisingly earn a draw in this one, but a Real Madrid victory is the most likely outcome
