Team News

Athletic Club
Real Sociedad
  • Unai Vencedor has shaken off an injury, but Nico Williams remains out.
  • Inigo Martinez is also back, following suspension, but Oier Zarraga is sidelined with a ban of his own.
  • Ander Capa is a doubt.
  • Raul Garcia could start ahead of Oihan Sancet up top.
  • Carlos Fernandez is nearing a return after a long-term injury, but Nacho Monreal and Ander Barrenetxea are still out.
  • Adnan Januzaj is a fresh blow and that could give Portu an opportunity out wide.
  • Few other changes are expected from Imano Alguacil.

Prediction

  • Athletic Club suffered a shock setback in their bid to secure a European spot last time out, losing 3-2 to strugglers Mallorca despite goals form Raul Garcia and Alejandro Remiro.
  • The Lions had been in good form before that, drawing with Valencia in the Copa del Rey, also beating Espanyol and Rayo Vallecano in La Liga.
  • Marcelino's men are now in eighth place and two points off the top seven, four off the top six, a gap they can close against the team in sixth place here, and their biggest rivals Real Sociedad.
  • Real Sociedad make the relatively short trip across the Basque country to face rivals Athletic Club on the back of an important win last time out.
  • Alguacil's men returned to the top six with a 2-0 win over Granada thanks to goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Rafinha. That win followed a draw with Valencia, a defeat to Real Betis and a draw with Getafe.
  • La Real were also in Europa League action during the week, when they drew 2-2 away from home against RB Leipzig. Robin Le Normand scored the first and Mikel Oyarzabal the second, but twice Real Sociedad were pegged back.
  • This Basque derby is a close one to call, and it could well end in a goalless draw.
