Team News

Southampton
Man Utd
  • Claude Puel could make a number of changes to the side that beat Middlesbrough last time out for their penultimate home game of the season on Wednesday.
  • Charlie Austin got his first minutes in more than five months against Middlesbrough at the weekend and will be pushing for a start against Manchester United.
  • Matt Targett, who also hasn't featured since October, was an unused substitute on Saturday.
  • Sofiane Boufal was subbed off at half time against Boro and it seems unlikely he will feature on Wednesday.
  • Claude Puel is still without Alex McCarthy and Virgil van Dijk due to injury, while Sam McQueen is a doubt.
  • Marouane Fellaini returns from a three-match suspension and will start in midfield for the midweek trip to Southampton, but Paul Pogba will miss out for the second game in a row following the death of his father.
  • Matteo Darmian is expected to be recalled to the side at left-back after Jose Mourinho confirmed Daley Blind will be rested against Southampton.
  • Mourinho has confirmed Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira will play in goal for their remaining league games but did not say in what order. David De Gea has not even travelled to Southampton and may have played his final game for the club.
  • Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could continue at the heart of the back four in order to bed them in for the Europa League final, with Eric Bailly retaining his spot at right-back in the absence of Antonio Valencia, who is being rested.
  • The United manager may turn to his stronger players against Southampton before resting them on the last day of the season, three days before their Europa League final against Ajax.
  • Some of the United youth team players will be looking to impress in the final two league games of the season.

Prediction

  • Southampton ended a three-game run without a goal to beat Middlesbrough at the weekend and Claude Puel could do with a big result here to ease the pressure on his job.
  • Manchester United seem to have given up on the league and are just looking to get through these last two matches without injury ahead of their Europa League final at the end of the month.
  • These matches are usually very close and Southampton will be keen to avenge their EFL Cup final defeat from earlier in the year. Four of the last five matches between the two sides at Saint Mary's have been decided by a one-goal margin. Expect a similarly tight match here.
