Now the 2018 World Cup is underway, we are going to highlight five players you should consider for your Football INDEX portfolios 24 hours before their matches. Here are our four tips for Thursday’s group games:
1. JUAN QUINTERO (COLOMBIA VS SENEGAL)
Juan Quintero was tipped to be the next superstar when he signed for Porto from Pescara in 2013 but he hasn’t managed to live up to the hype.
Still only 25, time is on his side and he looks to have recaptured some of the magic his early promise suggested in Colombia’s first two games of the 2018 World Cup.
Quintero has quickly established himself as a key player for the South American’s this summer, so much so that James Rodriguez has been forced to play out wide.
Porto have sent Quintero out on loan to three different clubs over the last three seasons but will be delighted by his performances this summer.
Quintero scored a clever free-kick in Colombia’s opener and provided an assist in their 3-1 mauling of Poland last time out.
Colombia need a result against Senegal to advance to the next round of the competition and Quintero will be key for Jose Pekerman’s side.
Real Madrid signed Rodriguez in a blockbuster move off the back of his startling form at the 2014 World Cup and now it’s been suggested the European champions will repeat the trick with his Colombian team-mate this summer.
His Football INDEX share price has increased 81.37% in the last seven days of trading and will continue to rise as long as Colombia stay in the tournament.
2. TAKASHI INUI (JAPAN VS POLAND)
Not many gave Japan a puncher’s chance when they were drawn in a group along with Poland, Senegal and Colombia at the 2018 World Cup, but Akira Nishino’s side are in the mix for a top-two finish heading into the last round of group games.
Japan stunned Colombia in their first match and twice came from behind to secure a vital point against Senegal on Sunday. The Samurai Blue only need a point from their encounter with Poland on Thursday to guarantee qualification and will progress regardless if Colombia lose to Senegal.
Key to Japan’s fine start in Russia has been Eibar midfielder Takashi Inui. The 30-year-old played a direct hand in both of Japan’s goals in a 2-2 draw with Senegal and Nishino will hope the veteran will turn in a similarly impressive display next time out.
Only Yuka Osako (7.55) has secured a higher WhoScored rating than Inui (7.36) of all Japan players at the 2018 World Cup and his Football INDEX share price is only £0.61.
3. DANNY ROSE (ENGLAND VS BELGIUM)
England have already qualified for the round of 16 of the 2018 World Cup and Gareth Southgate is set to make wholesale changes for their final group match against Belgium on Thursday.
Both sides have identical records but finishing second in Group G could actually provide the best route through the knockout stage of the tournament. While neither will admit they want second, it will surely be in the back of their minds.
Southgate will turn to a number of England’s fringe players against the Red Devils, with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Eric Dier set to profit with some playing time on Thursday.
Danny Rose will also start for the Three Lions and the Tottenham ace will be out to impress Southgate and put his name in contention for England’s round of 16 match.
The 27-year-old would have been Southgate’s first choice left-back this summer had it not been for a serious knee injury that almost wrecked his campaign last season.
Rose was limited to 10 Premier League appearances as a result and has dropped below Young in the pecking order. However, there is no reason why he cannot regain his place on a regular basis.
His Football INDEX share price is £1.58 and that will only increase if he is successful in dethroning Young, while there is also the chance of a summer move away from Spurs.
4. WAHBI KHAZRI (TUNISIA VS PANAMA)
Thursday night’s other game between Tunisia and Panama is a dead rubber. Neither side can progress, but both will want to win. This is Panama’s first World Cup and capping it off with their first ever win would be an achievement that cannot be downplayed.
Tunisia, meanwhile, are participating in their first World Cup in 12 years and haven’t won a game at the finals since 1978. Based on the performances of both teams so far this summer, the north African side will be confident of picking up three points.
Nabil Maaloul’s side impressed in patches against England and Belgium and former Sunderland winger Wahbi Khazri has been their best player over the two games, playing a direct hand in two of the three goals they have scored this summer (one goal, one assist).
The 27-year-old failed to make the grade at Sunderland and has since returned to France. Another impressive showing on Thursday could potentially lead to a move around Europe this summer and his Football INDEX share price is only £0.73.
