The outcomes that can become official in Europe’s top five leagues this weekend

Having entered May and with it the final stretch across all of Europe’s top five leagues this season, we run through what could be assured over the weekend with regards to title tilts, European pushes and relegation scraps.

PREMIER LEAGUE

It’s been somewhat lost in the fact that the title race has been so close that Manchester City could retain their crown with a game to spare. If Liverpool were to lose against former manager Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool then Pep Guardiola’s side would seal top spot with victory at Leicester on Monday night.

Elsewhere Cardiff will be officially relegated if they lost at home against Palace and doomed if they draw given Brighton’s superior goal difference. Meanwhile, even if the Bluebirds win, Chris Hughton’s side could condemn them to the drop with a win at Arsenal the following day.

In the race for the top four that those involved appear reluctant to win in recent times, both Tottenham and Chelsea’s could seal their spot this weekend. It’s far more straightforward for Spurs, who would do so with a win at Bournemouth on Saturday lunchtime, or even if they draw and both Arsenal and Manchester United fail to win.

Chelsea will claim their place if they beat Watford on Sunday and both Arsenal and United fail to claim all three points against Brighton and Huddersfield on the same day.

SERIE A

The only outcome that could be mathematically sealed this weekend would be the relegation of Frosinone if they fail to better Udinese’s result. The minnows wouldn’t even get the chance to extend their stay of execution another week at Sassuolo on Sunday if Udinese were to win at home against Inter on Saturday night.

LA LIGA

It’s all to play for at the foot of La Liga this weekend, with both Huesca and Rayo Vallecano in danger of succumbing to the drop. The former know that defeat to Valencia would see them fall back into the second tier, although there is a strong likelihood they will already be doomed given that is the last match of the week in Spain.

Victory for Real Valladolid or a point or more for Levante, Girona or Celta Vigo would relegate Huesca before they have a chance to play. Rayo, meanwhile, travel to Levante in what is arguably the biggest game in La Liga this weekend - at midday on Saturday - needing a win to be in with any real chance of catching their hosts. If they fail to match or better Celta’s result against Barcelona or Girona’s result at Getafe then Paco Jemez’s men would also be relegated by a victory for Real Valladolid against Athletic Club.

BUNDESLIGA

It’s a similar picture in Germany, where two sides could be relegated this weekend in the form of Hannover and Nuernberg. The former, who are bottom of the table, must match or better the result of Stuttgart - who play Hertha Berlin - but face league leaders Bayern Munich away from home.

Nuernberg, meanwhile, will be relegated if Stuttgart win in the capital and they fail to do so away to Wolfsburg, with all three matches to be played on Saturday afternoon.

LIGUE 1

With four games still remaining in France’s top tier, PSG’s title is the only thing to have been guaranteed in Ligue 1, and there is only one significant outcome that could be cemented this weekend. That also comes at the top of the table, where second placed Lille can secure a top three finish - and a place in the Champions League qualifiers at the least - if they better Saint-Etienne’s result in Monaco. Christophe Galtier’s side just happen to be facing third place Lyon in what is undoubtedly the game of the week in France on Sunday night.
