Man Utd hit Roma for six to dominate Europa League team of the week

 

It's advantage Manchester United and Villarreal ahead of next week's Europa League semi-finals after their respective first leg wins over Roma and Arsenal. United were dominant as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aims to rid himself of his semi-final demons having lost his last four encounters at this stage in all competitions. 

 

Having romped to a 6-2 win over the Italian side on Thursday night, it's no shock to see United dominate the Europa League team of the week, with seven players making the cut. Here, we run through the top three performing players from the first leg games. 

 

3. Paul Pogba (Manchester United) - 8.07 

 

Paul Pogba conceded a contentious penalty after 15 minutes against Roma, but made amends over the course of the game. Indeed, the Frenchman bagged his second goal of the competition with 15 minutes to play, that his first at Old Trafford since April 2019. Pogba's goal came from one of two shots and he tormented the Roma backline, completing four dribbles. An additional two tackles capped a fine showing from the 28-year-old, who earned a WhoScored rating of 8.07. 

 

2. Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) - 9.70 

 

After a brace of goals and assists against Roma, Bruno Fernandes has now had a direct hand in 41 competitive goals for Manchester United this season. Not bad for a midfielder! The 26-year-old opened the scoring on the night and added his second with 20 minutes to go, all the while providing for Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba to hit the back of the net. Fernandes' brace came from five shots and his two assists from six key passes, that more than any other player on Thursday night, to help yield a WhoScored rating of 9.70.

1. Edinson Cavani (Manchester United) - 10.0 

 

Our Europa League player of the week, Edinson Cavani returned a perfect WhoScored 10 rating as he extended his fine goalscoring record against Roma. A brace on Thursday night means the Uruguayan has now scored 11 times against the Rome giants in his career as he netted with two of his seven shots. Like Fernandes, Cavani also returned a pair of assists, turning creator for the Portuguese goal machine and youngster Mason Greenwood, those coming from three key passes, to cap a sensational showing.
