Manchester United star player of the round for League Cup quarter-finals

 

Manchester United, Manchester City, Leicester and Aston Villa all advanced to the last four of the Carabao Cup in midweek with Colchester, Oxford, Everton and Liverpool all crashing out, respectively.

 

The two Manchester clubs failed to avoid each other in the draw for the last four and will play out two derbies next month, while Leicester and Villa will battle for a place in the Carabao Cup final in the other semi.

5) Joao Cancelo (Manchester City) - 8.37 rating

Joao Cancelo has endured a relatively underwhelming start to life at Manchester City but did score his first goal for the club in their 3-1 win away to Oxford. Cancelo opened the scorting for Pep Guardiola's side, albeit helped by a huge deflection. The 25-year-old also registered two key passes, won three fouls and completed two dribbles.

 

4) Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa) - 8.63 rating

Conor Hourihane is one of three Aston Villa players in the top five after their 5-0 win over Liverpool's youngsters. The 28-year-old has now scored in back-to-back home games for Villa, although Jonathan Kodjia will contest he got a touch on Hourihane's whipped free-kick. The Irishman made three interceptions and impressively completed 96% of his attempted passes on Tuesday.

 

3) Jonathan Kodjia (Aston Villa) - 8.65 rating

 

Jonathan Kodjia will hope his brace against Liverpool will put him in a good position to usurp Wesley in the pecking order for Saturday's league game against Southampton. Kodjia has tried to claim he should have had a hat-trick against Liverpool, though their first goal has been credited to Hourihane. Kodjia only had 16 touches of the ball during his 72 minutes on the pitch but two of those results in goals, scoring from his only shots of the game.

2) Orjan Nyland (Aston Villa) - 8.78 rating

 

The fact Aston Villa's goalkeeper ended up getting the WhoScored Man of the Match award in a 5-0 win over Liverpool suggests the scoreline flattered them. That was indeed the case. Liverpool's youngsters conducted themselves brilliantly and actually had more possession (57%) and both more attempts (15) on goal and more shots on target (8) from both of his attempts on goal. Nyland made eight saves and some of them were genuinely world-class to deny Liverpool's starlets.

 

1) Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) - 8.86 rating

Manchester United laboured at times against League Two outfit Colchester but eventually ran out 3-0 winners courtesy of another decisive Marcus Rashford performance. Rashford opened the scoring with an emphatic finish after a dribble across the face of Colchester's goal and turned supplier to hand Anthony Martial a simple tap-in for United's third. Rashford should have really done better with other opportunities after only hitting the target with two of his seven attempts but finishes as the player of the round from the Carabao Cup quarter-final ties.
