Van Dijk, Aguero and Pogba included in Premier League Team of the Season
Here we run through the best rated XI of the Premier League season so far, with additional information about their Football INDEX share prices.
Goalkeeper: Lukasz Fabianski (West Ham) – 7.01 rating
Football INDEX share price - £0.70
Lukasz Fabianski has enjoyed a solid first campaign for West Ham and is rewarded with a place in our Premier League Team of the Season so far ahead of Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris. Fabianski has made the most saves in the division this season (115) and has kept five clean sheets for the Hammers.
Left-back: Lucas Digne (Everton) – 7.29 rating
Football INDEX share price - £2.39
Lucas Digne is another summer signing to make the best rated XI. The former Barcelona left-back has forced veteran Leighton Baines out of the team and is now Everton’s undisputed first-choice left-back. Only two players have scored more goals from outside the box than Digne (3) in the Premier League this season and the France international has also provided four assists.
Centre-back: Fabian Schar (Newcastle) – 7.31 rating
Football INDEX share price - £0.92
Fabian Schar has been one of the unheralded stars of the season in the Premier League. Newcastle’s win ratio in the Premier League this season with Schar in the starting XI is 50% compared to just 6.7% when he hasn’t featured from the off. The Switzerland international also scored Newcastle’s first goal from outside the box in the Premier League this season with a goal of the season contender. He has netted three league goals in total, all coming since the turn of the year.
Centre-back: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) – 7.44 rating
Football INDEX share price - £6.92
Virgil van Dijk is the highest WhoScored rated defender in the Premier League and he has also established himself as one of the best players in the division. The 27-year-old has collected four WhoScored Man of the Match awards, while netting three goals and providing one assist. He also has a hugely impressive aerial duel success rate of 77%.
Right-back: Ricardo Pereira (Leicester) – 7.25 rating
Football INDEX share price - £1.42
Ricardo Pereira is the fourth summer signing in the first five spots in our best rated XI. The Portugal international has played in a variety of positions this season but now looks set to see out the season at right-back under Brendan Rodgers. Pereira has played a direct hand in six goals and is one of just four players in the division to make over 100 tackles this season.
Left midfield: Eden Hazard (Chelsea) – 7.69 rating
Football INDEX share price - £14.29
Despite the fact this season has been dominated by talk of his future, Eden Hazard has still operated at the highest level for Chelsea. The Belgium international is the only player to have reached double figures for goals (13 goals) and assists (11 goals) in the Premier League this season and has also completed at least eight more dribbles than any other player in the division (92).
Central midfield: Fernandinho (Manchester City) – 7.40 rating
Football INDEX share price - £0.93
Fernandinho is enjoying another standout campaign under Pep Guardiola this season and is currently the second highest rated central midfielder in the Premier League. The Brazilian’s primary role is to break down opposition attacks but he has still managed to play a direct hand in four league goals this term. Furthermore, only two midfielders are averaging more passes per game than Fernandinho in England’s top-flight (75.3).
Central midfield: Paul Pogba (Manchester United) – 7.43 rating
Football INDEX share price - £23.33
Paul Pogba may not have been on good terms with Jose Mourinho up until the Portuguese was sacked but he has still been phenomenal for Manchester United this season, even more so under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Pogba has remarkably weighed in with nine 11 goals and nine assists in the Premier League this season. In fact, only Eden Hazard’s goals and assists have won more points (20) than Pogba’s (19) in England’s top-flight so far this season.
Right midfield: Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) – 7.73 rating
Football INDEX share price - £13.04
Raheem Sterling has evolved into an instrumental player for club and country this season, netting hat-tricks for both Manchester City and England this month. Pep Guardiola is making sure Sterling is involved in the areas that can really hurt opponents, illustrated by the fact only one player has managed more touches in the opposition penalty area than Sterling in the Premier League this season (236). The 24-year-old has scored 15 times in the league this season – three shy of his personal best tally in a single-campaign – and has an outside chance of challenging for the Golden Boot.
Striker: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) – 7.53 rating
Football INDEX share price - £12.43
Mohamed Salah has struggled in front of goal of late but the Liverpool striker has been excellent again this season, proving he is not a one-season wonder. In addition to his 17 league goals this season, only one player has created more clear-cut chances in the Premier League than Salah (13). He has also won the joint-most amount of penalties (4) in the league this season and only two players have won the WhoScored Man of the Match more times than the 26-year-old (six).
Striker: Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) – 7.55 rating
Football INDEX share price - £4.74
Sergio Aguero is the outright leader in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot this season (18), one clear of the chasing pack. The 30-year-old is the only player to score multiple hat-tricks in the Premier League this season and has actually done so three times. Aguero has scored the most clear-cut chances (13) in the league this season and has played an integral part in City clawing their way back to into the Premier League title race.
