2018 World Cup Team of the Tournament: Trippier emerges as England star

England exceeded expectations at the 2018 World Cup, achieving their best finish since 1990 and successfully fixing the disconnect with supporters along the way.

The Three Lions played some good football at times but their semi-final defeat to Croatia only illustrated their flaws. Nevertheless, England should only take the positives from a successful campaign.

John Stones and Jordan Pickford excelled, but England’s standout performer was Kieran Trippier. The Tottenham defender was a revelation for Southgate’s side, utilising his excellent crossing throughout the tournament.

England scored more goals from set-pieces than any other nation at the 2018 World Cup (9) and Trippier’s delivery caused havoc. Unsurprisingly, Trippier completed the most crosses in Russia (19), at least eight more than any other player.

Not only that, but Trippier also created the most goalscoring opportunities (24), while opening his account for the Three Lions with a stunning free-kick in England’s semi-final defeat to Croatia.

While a threat in attack, Trippier also proved dependable in defence. No right-back made more tackles than the 27-year-old (15) and an average of 2.7 aerials won per game is an impressive feat for someone of his size.
