Tottenham Season Preview: Key Player, Signing to Watch, Predicted Lineup and Betting Tip
Tottenham are next up in our 2024/25 Premier League season preview as we look back at their 2023/24 campaign, pick out the key player, the signing to watch, predict where they'll finish and make a betting tip via oddschecker.
2023/24 Season Roundup
Tottenham came flying out of the blocks in their debut season under Ange Postecoglou, and were top of the Premier League - and unbeaten - in early November. Spurs were then struck with a horror injury crisis, with two of the key protagonists behind their early season form, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, ruled out for months. To his credit, Postecoglou did well with the players at his disposal, often fielding a makeshift backline due to those absent. Despite key players returning towards the end of the campaign, Spurs struggled to find their best form again, ultimately finishing fifth, and two points from Champions League qualification.
Key Player - Cristian Romero
One of Spurs’ three senior captains, Cristian Romero showed the very best of himself under Postecoglou last season, ending the campaign as the Premier League’s third highest rated centre-back. The Argentine struck up a strong partnership with 23-year-old Micky van de Ven, and taking on a more senior role also saw him record a better disciplinary record than in previous years. What’s more, no defender scored more Premier League goals than Romero last season (5).
Signing to Watch - Dominic Solanke
At £65 million, Tottenham’s move to sign Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke is the most expensive purchase of the summer transfer window thus far. Spurs, though, will have every confidence that the 26-year-old will be worth the sizeable fee taken to prise him away from the south coast. After scoring six league goals in the 2022/23 season, Solanke’s output in front of goal exploded under new Cherries manager Andoni Iraola last term. The former Chelsea and Liverpool forward bagged an impressive 19 goals, ending the season as the Premier League’s fourth highest goalscorer. Solanke’s abilities to press from the front, run the channels and hold up play will be crucial as to why Ange Postecoglou pushed through with a move.
Predicted opening day XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Maddison, Bentancur; Kulusevski, Solanke, Son
Predicted finish - 4th
