Revealed: Only three Manchester United players make Manchester derby combined XI
Manchester United will be full of confidence heading into the first Manchester derby of the season after beating Tottenham 2-1 on Wednesday night. It proved a night to forget for Jose Mourinho, who returned to Old Trafford for the first time since being sacked as United boss nearly 12 months ago. Instead, his successor, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, came out with three points and described United's display as their best of the season.
Things get even more difficult for United, however, as now they turn their attentions to Saturday's derby away to Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's side could be as many as 14 points behind league leaders Liverpool by the time this match starts on Saturday afternoon and the pressure will be ramped up on the defending champions once more.
Here we run through the combined Manchester derby XI, only considering those who are available to play on Saturday and have made at least five league appearances this season.
Goalkeeper: Ederson (Manchester City) - 6.68 rating
Ederson comfortably edges David de Gea (6.55) for a place in the XI to kick things off. The Brazil international has kept five clean sheets in the Premier League this season, three more than his opposite number. Ederson also has a far superior pass success rate (86.9%) than De Gea (71.1%) in the league this term.
Left-back: Angelino (Manchester City) - 6.80 rating
Angelino is the lowest WhoScored rated outfielder in the combined XI, as left-back has proved something of a difficult position for both teams this season. Neither manager has been able to call on their first choice on a consistent basis this season, illustrated by Angelino's inclusion here. The 22-year-old's WhoScored rating has increased in each of his last three appearances for City, which is at least positive for Guardiola.
Centre-back: Fernandinho (Manchester City) - 6.93 rating
Manchester City's failure to replace Vincent Kompany in the summer, coupled with injuries to a number of defenders has forced Fernandinho to drop into the back four for most of the season. The 34-year-old is now considered first-choice in that position ahead of recognised centre-backs John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi. Fernandinho sees more of the ball in that position, illustrated by the fact only one player averages more passes per game than the City veteran (75) in the Premier League this season.
Centre-back: Harry Maguire (Manchester United) - 6.88 rating
Pep Guardiola wanted to sign Harry Maguire as Vincent Kompany's long-term replacement but the centre-back ended up joining the red side of Manchester in the summer. United supporters are still waiting to see the best from Maguire at both ends of the pitch, though he is at least a huge upgrade on the likes of Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo. Maguire has notably won 66.7% of his aerial duels in the league this season.
Right-back: Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United) - 7.10 rating
Another Manchester United summer signing makes the cut, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka beating Kyle Walker (6.74) and Joao Cancelo (6.95) to a place in the team. United fans will want to see more of Wan-Bissaka as an attacking outlet but he has already proved his worth at the back with his immense tackling ability. In fact, only two players have won more tackles and interceptions combined than Wan-Bissaka (82) in the Premier League this season.
Central midfield: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) - 7.88 rating
Kevin De Bruyne is the highest WhoScored rated player in our combined XI, helped by a direct hand in 13 goals in 14 league appearances. The Belgian has registered the most assists in the division (9), three more than any other player despite the fact he has not set up a league goal in any of his last five outings. It hasn't been for a lack of trying, however, as De Bruyne has created the most goalscoring chances in the Premier League this season (55).
Central midfield: Rodri (Manchester City) - 7.42 rating
Rodri turned in his best WhoScored rated performance of the season in Tuesday night's 4-1 demolition at Burnley. The Spaniard was tipped to struggle at Turf Moor but responded in great fashion and even netted his second league goal of the season with a effort from distance. The 23-year-old ranks third in the division for best pass success rate (91.8%).
Central midfield: Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) - 7.48 rating
Bernardo Silva edges out team-mate David Silva (7.23) to complete the midfield in our best rated combined XI. The Portugal international hasn't quite hit the heights of last season but is still proving hugely important for Pep Guardiola's side. Silva has played a direct hand in nine goals in 13 league appearances (five goals, four assists) this season and boasts a thoroughly impressive dribble success rate of 77.1%.
Right wing: Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) - 7.49 rating
Raheem Sterling has continued to evolve into one of the biggest stars on and off the pitch this season, earning a place on the left of attack in our combined XI. The City No.7 has scored eight goals in 14 league appearances so far this season and his WhoScored rating has only finished below 7.00 in four of those outings - curiously all at home. Guardiola will hope Sterling picks up his scoring rate in the league however, with only three goals in his last 11.
Striker: Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) - 7.36 rating
Marcus Rashford is already just one goal from matching his best-ever tally in a single Premier League campaign after netting twice in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Tottenham. Rashford has nine goals and four assists in 15 league appearances this season and eight of those have come in his last seven outings. Rashford has illustrated he has a big-game mentality with goals against Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea and Leicester this season.
Left wing: Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City) - 7.61 rating
Riyad Mahrez has struggled to nail down a regular first-team spot for Manchester City even with Leroy Sane sidelined with a long-term knee injury, making only seven starts from a possible 15. Nevertheless, the Algeria international has still weighed in with four goals and three assists for City and averages 3.1 key passes per 90.
City must win against utd and please some clean sheet
