Vardy the star but Aston Villa dominate Premier League team of the week

In another weekend of upsets and drama in the Premier League, Leicester landed a Jamie Vardy-inspired 5-2 win at Manchester City while Chelsea were held to a 3-3 draw by newly-promoted West Brom. However, it's Aston Villa who dominate the Premier League team of the week on the back of their 3-0 win at Fulham on Monday evening.

Here, we run through the best XI from gameweek three of the 2020/21 campaign...

Karl Darlow (Newcastle) - 9.34

Newcastle rescued a point at the death at Tottenham on Sunday courtesy of a contentious Callum Wilson penalty, but the result was largely made possible by the goalkeeping heroics of Karl Darlow. Deputising for Martin Dubravka, Darlow made a whopping 11 saves, a return bettered only once in a Premier League match since August 2018, and more than 17 of the 21 goalkeepers used in England's top tier in 2020/21 have made as he makes the team with a WhoScored rating of 9.34.

Matthew Cash (Aston Villa) - 8.40

The first of four Aston Villa representatives to feature in the Premier League team of the week following their 3-0 win at Fulham on Monday night, Matthew Cash was an impressive capture from Nottingham Forest and he followed up his solid debut against Sheffield United with a fine showing from right-back against the Cottagers. Cash made seven tackles against Fulham - no player has made more in a Premier League match this term - while an additional three interceptions contributed to a WhoScored rating of 8.40.

Jan Bednarek (Southampton) - 7.96

Featuring at the heart of the defence is Jan Bednarek, who garnered a WhoScored rating of 7.96 as Southampton earned their win of the season. Shutting out Burnley at Turf Moor is never easy feat, but Bednarek played a vital role at the back, winning eight aerial duels and making 13 clearances, as the Pole excelled to help Saints to a narrow 1-0 victory over the Clarets.

Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa) - 8.21

Making the Premier League team of the week for the second gameweek running. Having provided an assist for Ezri Konsa's winner against Sheffield United last time out, Tyrone Mings scored his first goal of the campaign in the win over Fulham, hitting the back of the net with one of two shots. In addition, Mings made 12 clearances as he came away from the clash with a WhoScored rating of 8.21.

Arthur Masuaku (West Ham) - 8.42

Rounding off the backline is the sole West Ham representative in the Premier League team of the week. West Ham smashed Wolves 4-0 in Sunday's late kick off, a result nobody expected, as the Hammers ran riot at the London Stadium. Arthur Masuaku had a direct hand in one of the four goals in the victory, providing the assist for Sebastien Haller's late goal, with that coming from one of four key passes. The defender got forward well, completing two dribbles, and was solid out of possession as he made three tackles to secure his place in this XI.

Mason Mount (Chelsea) - 8.52

Chelsea were forced to come from behind to secure a result at the Hawthorns on Saturday evening as they played out a 3-3 draw with West Brom. 3-0 down at the break, it was Mason Mount who kickstarted the comeback with a fine strike 10 minutes after the restart. That goal came from one of seven shots in the stalemate and he was unfortunate not to grab an assist, too, as he created four goalscoring chances to come away from the clash with a WhoScored rating of 8.52.

John McGinn (Aston Villa) - 8.60

The third Villa player to make the cut, John McGinn notched his first and second Premier League assists of the season in the win at Villa, teeing up Jack Grealish to open the scoring after four minutes before providing for Conor Hourihane on the 15-minute mark. The Scot's two assists came from four key passes at Craven Cottage, while two successful dribbles help McGinn to a WhoScored rating of 8.60.

Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa) - 8.51

Joining McGinn in the middle of the park is Conor Hourihane, who bagged his first league goal of the season at Fulham before turning provider shortly after the break, setting up Tyrone Mings for his first league goal of 2020/21. Hourihane's goal came from one of two shots and assist from one of three key passes to contribute towards the 29-year-old's selection in this XI.

Solly March (Brighton) - 8.79

In a drama-strewn encounter at the AMEX, Solly March thought he'd rescued a late point for Brighton against Manchester United, before Bruno Fernandes won it for the visitors with the final kick of the game from the spot. March's goal came from one of five shots in Brighton's 3-2 loss to United as he broke forward well in the defeat, completing seven dribbles. The 26-year-old was solid out of possession as he made four tackles and two interceptions to edge out Jack Grealish (8.62) in the team of the week.

Callum Robinson (West Brom) - 8.75

Callum Robinson doubled his 2019/20 Premier League goal tally in the first half of West Brom's 3-3 draw with Chelsea on Saturday. Robinson hit the back of the net with two of three shots in the stalemate and he drove forward well in possession, too, as he completed two dribbles before he was brought off midway through the second half to feature in this XI with a WhoScored rating of 8.75.

Jamie Vardy (Leicester) - 9.60

Saving the best until last, Jamie Vardy was in rampant form for Leicester as they landed an impressive 5-2 win at Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. Vardy hit the back of the net with all three shots in the victory to take his total to five league goals of the season. His hat-trick saw a Pep Guardiola side ship five for the first time in a league match in his career as the 33-year-old returned a WhoScored rating of 9.60 at the Etihad Stadium.
