European Team of the Week: Chelsea sensation excels in back-to-back wins

 

Goalkeeper: Andrea Consigli (Sassuolo) - 8.15 rating 

 

Sassuolo followed up their impressive midweek 4-0 win over Chievo with a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Lazio to improve their chances of a top half finish. Andrea Consigli was influential in attaining a clean sheet in the former outing, saving a late penalty to earn the man of the match award with an 8.97 rating, and after two notable outings between the sticks, his WhoScored rating was a commendable 8.15 from the two matches. 

 

Right-Back: William (Wolfsburg) - 8.36 rating 

 

Wolfsburg gave their chances of a top six finish a shot in the arm with a 3-1 win over Hannover 96 at the weekend with William impressing in a man of the match display. The defender landed a WhoScored rating of 8.36 in the victory with his fine work off the ball earning him the accolade as the Brazilian made seven tackles and five interceptions to make this XI. 

 

Centre-back: Dante (Nice) - 8.42 rating 

 

Nice battled to a 1-0 win over Montpellier at the weekend to keep their top four hopes alive with Dante the second of two Brazilian defenders to make the European team of the week. The experienced centre-back bagged the decisive goal in the victory, that his first of the season, and put in an impressive rearguard performance as he made two tackles, two interceptions and five clearances to return a WhoScored rating of 8.42. 

 

Centre-back: Felix Eboa Eboa (Guingamp) - 8.30 rating 

 

It’s an all Ligue 1 centre-back partnership in the European team of the week with Felix Eboa Eboa impressive in Guingamp’s 1-1 draw with Monaco. The youngster returned a WhoScored rating of 8.30, that enough to secure the man of the match award, as he, like Dante, netted at the weekend, while returns of nine clearances, one tackle and one interception capped a fine showing. 

 

Left-back: Issiaga Sylla (Toulouse) - 8.83 rating 

 

Rounding off the defence is Toulouse left-back Issiaga Sylla, who scored his second goal of the season in a 1-0 win over Nantes. His goal came from his only shot in the victory while his defensive work ensured all three points and a clean sheet as Sylla made five tackles, two interceptions and six clearances in the narrow win to return a WhoScored rating of 8.83. 

 

Right midfield: Nuno da Costa (Strasbourg) - 8.45 rating 

 

Of the eight league goals Nuno da Costa has scored this season, three came in recent meetings with Reims and PSG. Strasbourg’s 2-2 draw with the latter is best remembered for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s bizarre miss, but it marked another solid showing from Da Costa, whose three goals came from six shots as he did enough to earn an average rating of 8.45. 

 

Central midfield: Jeff Reine-Adelaide (Angers) - 9.21 rating 

 

Jeff Reine-Adelaide has had a direct hand in five league goals for Angers this season. Three of those came in their entertaining 3-3 draw with Rennes as the former Arsenal man scored two and assisted one in the stalemate. His brace came from four shots and assist from two key passes, while three successful dribbles contributed to a WhoScored rating of 9.21.

Central midfield: Jean-Paul Boetius (Mainz 05) - 10.0 rating 

 

The first of two Mainz 05 players, Jean-Paul Boetius was hugely effective in a Friday’s 5-0 win over Freiburg as he scored one and assisted two from returns of two shots and two key passes. With five interceptions and two tackles to his name, the 25-year-old was good value for his WhoScored rating of 10.0. 

 

Left midfield: Eden Hazard (Chelsea) - 9.71 rating 

 

The sole Premier League representative is Eden Hazard, who secured back-to-back Premier League player of the week awards from WhoScored. Indeed, in wins over Brighton and West Ham, the Belgian’s average rating was an impressive 9.71 as he had a direct hand in four of the five goals the Blues netted, scoring three and assisting one. Hitting the back of the net with three of seven shots and assisting from one of eight key passes was notable while a combined 13 successful dribbles saw Hazard land his 12th and 13th man of the match awards. 

 

Striker: Ishak Belfodil (Hoffenheim) - 9.82 rating 

 

Ishak Belfodil has been in rampant form for this impressive Hoffenheim side of late and he maintained his fine goalscoring record with a hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Augsburg. The Algerian scored with three of his eight shots, while two successful dribbles and one key pass helped gain a WhoScored rating of 9.92. 

 

Striker: Jean-Philippe Mateta (Mainz 05) - 9.95 rating

 

Completing the European team of the week is Mainz 05 forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, who returned a WhoScored rating of 9.95 from their win over Freiburg. The Frenchman exhibited his prolificacy as he scored with three of his four shots. An additional three successful dribbles capped off a fine display as Mainz 05 ended a four-match losing run in fine fashion.
