REVEALED: The Premier League players to have the worst impact on win rate
The lineup announcement is always an eagerly anticipated revelation on social media, with fans often making assertions on how a match will pan out before a ball is even kicked.
The absence or inclusion or certain players are often met with more ire than others, but which have been the most influential on their side’s results this season?
We’ve taken a look at the biggest impact on win rates of players to have missed more than five matches in the Premier League so far, starting with the biggest negative difference.
5) Jeff Hendrick (Burnley): -32.1% win rate
Rotating in and out of the Burnley side this season, Hendrick has been named in the XI for 15 of 26 league matches this season but has only ended up on the winning side in two of said starts appearances. Both of those wins (vs Fulham and Brighton) have come since the turn of the year, with the Republic of Ireland international starting ten matches without ending on the winning team beforehand. By comparison, the Clarets have won five of the 11 matches he has not started.
4) Martin Montoya (Brighton): -33.3% win rate
Former Barcelona graduate Montoya has become a regular at right-back of late following a summer switch to Brighton but it’s fair to say Chris Hughton’s side have struggled when the Spaniard has started this season. The Seagulls have won just three of the 18 league matches (16.7%) the 27-year-old has started in the league, doing so more times (four) in the eight matches (50%) he has missed.
3) Mario Lemina (Southampton): -38.6% win rate
While Lemina has been out for a matter of weeks now through injury it’s fair to say Ralph Hasenhuttl hasn’t been wholly convinced of his merits to start matches since his appointment. The Austrian’s judgement has been justified to now too, with four of Saints’ meagre tally of five wins coming in the nine matches the midfielder has not started (44.4%). That’s just one win in 17 Premier League starts (5.9%) for the former Juventus man this season then, and it wouldn’t be a great surprise if he was seen as dispensable come the summer.
2) Joe Hart (Burnley): -41.4% win rate
It’s unfortunate that Hart ranks so highly here given that he actually made a number of strong performances upon his arrival at Burnley, kept significantly busier than he should have been, but there’s no escaping the upturn in results since he was dropped. The Clarets have won more of the seven league matches he hasn’t started (four - 57.1%) than the 19 matches that he has (three - 15.8%), and Tom Heaton’s return to fitness has been a huge boost to Sean Dyche’s side.
1) Romelu Lukaku (Manchester United): -47.5% win rate
Without meaning to rub salt into any wounds, Lukaku’s place atop this list only strengthens the growing frustration towards the Belgian’s form this season. The former Everton forward has fallen out of favour since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment and his omission from the Norwegian’s starting lineups thus far has been justified. It only makes matters worse that the one league game that United have dropped points under the new boss, at home to Burnley, Lukaku got the nod up front. All in all, The Red Devils have won just five of the 14 league matches the striker has started this season (35.7%) compared to ten of the 12 he hasn’t (83.3%).
