Sunderland have announced Jordan Pickford has signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal keeping him at the club until 2020.
Pickford, 21, only made his first-team for the Black Cats this month and has conceded seven goals in his two appearances this month.
The England Under-21 international spent the first half of this season on loan with Preston in the Championship, but he was recalled to Sunderland by Sam Allardyce on New Years Eve and is deemed good enough for the club to have sold Costel Pantilimon to Watford earlier this month.
“Jordan is an exceptional talent who has already demonstrated that he is comfortable playing at the highest level. At the tender age of just 21, which is still very young in goalkeeping terms, there is still a lot more potential for development which is really exciting for us," Allardyce told Sunderland's official website.
“It’s always great to see a local lad progress through the academy ranks especially for our fans, and I am certain that Jordan has a very bright future ahead of him here at Sunderland."
Despite conceding four goals in his one and only Premier League appearance, Pickford still finished Sunderland’s 4-1 defeat to Spurs with an impressive WhoScored rating (7.01).
In fact, Spurs could have extended their winning margin had it not been for Pickford’s seven saves. However, that would come as no surprise from those that saw him on loan at Preston earlier in the season. Moreover, no goalkeeper has picked up more man of the match awards in the Championship than Pickford this season (3).
