Manchester United intend to trigger Alderweireld’s release clause

Manchester United will trigger Toby Alderweireld’s £25m release clause at the end of the season, reports The Sun.

United have made bolstering their defensive options their top priority in the summer and are ready to rekindle their interest in Alderweireld.

The Belgium international will only have 12 months left to run on his existing Tottenham deal this summer and will not sign a new contract.

United were interested in signing Alderweireld last summer but baulked at Tottenham’s £70m asking price.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will now be able to sign the 30-year-old for just £25m due to a release clause that will be active in his contract until the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

United are unlikely to be the only side interested in signing Alderweireld, who is considered among the best defenders in the Premier League.

Alderweireld is renowned for his phenomenal passing ability, illustrated by the fact he averages more accurate long balls than any other outfielder in the Premier League this season (7.6).
