Team News
Newcastle
Aston Villa
- Fabian Schar is a doubt for the opener, while Joe Willock is likely to miss out alongside Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth.
- Tino Livramento's arrival to strengthen options at full-back is timely, then, but it would be a surprise to see him push for a start here.
- Fellow arrivals Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes are likely to feature, however, with the latter facing stiff competition for a start from Anthony Gordon.
- As usual, Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson are set to vie for the spot up front rather than combine in the XI from the off.
- Unai Emery has a real dilemma down the left flank for the trip to Newcastle, with Alex Moreno and Jacob Ramsey the regulars in that respect last season both injured.
- Emi Buendia would likely have taken the place of the latter but news of his ACL injury on the eve of the season is a huge blow given his versatility and pre-season form, scoring twice against this weekend's opponents in the PL Summer Series.
- New signings Pau Torres, Youri Tielemans and Moussa Diaby will all hope to feature, with the former perhaps getting the nod over Lucas Digne in Moreno's absence, operating as a full-back out of possession before switching to a more familiar role on the left of a back three when Villa have the ball.
- Matty Cash has a key role to play on the opposite flank as a result, with the real question looming over the place on the left wing, with youngster Jaden Philogene-Bidace in contention with Leon Bailey and Philippe Coutinho.
