Rangers sign Barton

Rangers have announced they have signed Joey Barton on a free transfer after he left Burnley.

Barton, 33, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal after rejecting the chance to stay on at Burnley in the Premier League next season.

The controversial midfielder played an instrumental part in Burnley’s promotion straight back to the Premier League this season and was expected to stay at the Clarets and have one last crack at life in the Premier League.

However, Barton has instead made the decision to taste life in the Scottish Premier League with Rangers following their promotion back to the Scottish top-flight for the first time since they were demoted to the third division in 2012.

Only Dean Lewington (150) made more tackles and interceptions combined in the Championship in 2016 than Barton (131).
