WhoScored's European Team of the Week: Chelsea and Man City stars make the cut

 

Chelsea star Cole Palmer makes the WhoScored European Team of the Week for his performance against Tottenham on Sunday. Auxerre, Brentford, Monaco, Bournemouth, Lyon, Empoli, Marseille, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City are also represented in the XI. 

 

Donovan Leon (Auxerre) – 9.83 

 

Starting off with the European Player of the Week, Donovan Leon was superb between the sticks as Auxerre held PSG to a 0-0 draw on Friday. Leon made 11 saves, a record in a Ligue 1 match this season, and two high ball claims to contribute towards a WhoScored rating of 9.83. 

 

 

Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford) – 8.59 

 

Deployed at right wing-back against Newcastle, Bryan Mbeumo did well to land a WhoScored rating of 8.59 having scored one and assisted another in Brentford’s 4-2 win over the Magpies. Those came from respective returns of three shots and three key passes in a fine showing. 

 

Wilfried Singo (Monaco) – 8.45 

 

Wilfried Singo shone as Monaco earned a 2-0 home win over Toulouse on Saturday, netting his first league goal of the season with his only effort. The 23-year-old was influential in a clean-sheet attaining display as he made six clearances, two interceptions and one tackle on his way to a WhoScored rating of 8.45. 

 

Illia Zabaryni (Bournemouth) – 8.33 

 

Dango Ouattara may have been Bournemouth’s match winner late on at Ipswich on Sunday but the 2-1 victory was made possible by a solid showing from Illia Zabaryni at the heart of the Cherries defence. The Ukrainian was successful with all six attempted tackles, while six clearances and four aerial wins saw the 22-year-old return a WhoScored rating of 8.33. 

 

Nicolas Tagliafico (Lyon) – 8.19 

 

The first of two Lyon representatives rounds off the backline. Nicolas Tagliafico scored his second league goal of the season in their 3-0 win at Angers, netting with one of two shots, while the Argentine also made three tackles, two interceptions and one clearance. 

 

 

Cole Palmer (Chelsea) – 9.16 

 

Cole Palmer made history at Tottenham on Sunday having scored two penalties in Chelsea’s 4-3 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Palmer got the better of Fraser Forster with two of four shots, and was unfortunate not to add an assist having made four key passes. An additional four successful dribbles saw the 22-year-old return a WhoScored rating of 9.16. 

 

Sebastiano Esposito (Empoli) – 9.01 

 

Empoli claimed their third away league win of the season at Verona on Sunday, with Sebastiano Esposito key. Indeed, the 22-year-old scored his third and fourth league goals of the season in the 4-1 victory, bagging a brace with four shots, while two tackles and two dribbles saw the youngster land a WhoScored rating of 9.01. 

 

Mason Greenwood (Marseille) – 8.82 

 

Mason Greenwood completes the midfield with a WhoScored rating of 8.82.

Rayan Cherki (Lyon) – 8.58 

 

Rayan Cherki was the star performer in Lyon’s 3-0 win at Angers, returning a WhoScored rating of 8.58 in the process. Cherki was directly involved in two of Lyon’s three goals, netting with his only shot, and providing one assist from five key passes in a fine outing. 

 

Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid) – 9.01 

 

Atletico Madrid left it late to secure all the spoils against Sevilla, coming from 3-1 down to win 4-3 on Sunday night. Antoine Griezmann was on hand to score for the fourth game running having bagged a brace in the victory, including the 94th minute winner, from four efforts. 

 

Matheus Nunes (Manchester City) – 8.53 

 

While Manchester City’s poor run continued at Crystal Palace at the weekend, Matheus Nunes was on hand to register his third assist of the season at Selhurst Park, that coming from one of four key passes. Not only did Nunes complete three dribbles in the 2-2 draw, the Portuguese star also made five tackles and two interceptions to contribute towards a WhoScored rating of 8.53.
